The latest trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight has dropped and boy is it ever a wild ride. This being the fifth installment in the series, I am hoping that it follows what fellow Geek Motivation writer, Zach Briggs, and I refer to as the “fast and the furious rules” which states that the first movie is good, then they’re all bad until the fifth one. Obviously this is not a universally believed idea but we’ll carry on into the trailer.
This trailer shows the darker side of the leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime. In this film we see that he is attempting to save his own world, but in doing so, he must destroy ours. Cade Yeager, played by Bostons sweetheart, Mark Wahlberg, must stand alongside Bumblebee, an English Lord played by Anthony Hopkins, and an Oxford Professor, played by Laura Haddock, to save humanity from the countless acts of destruction caused by the transformers. In this two minute and forty four second trailer, I was able to count 34 explosions. That has to be some kind of record for Michael Bay.
Explosions aside, this film honestly looks like it will be a lot of fun. The darker tone shows that it could be a little more serious than it’s predecessors. I think that showing Optimus Prime as a fallen hero can create an interesting story arc that’ll lead to his redemption as most fallen hero story arcs do.
We see in his trailer that the movie will be taking a popular formula from he past few years of putting two iconic heroes against each other. For example, Batman against Superman in Batman Vs Superman, Captain America against Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War, and Charlie Day against Ice Cube in the hit film Fist Fight. This may create a way for the films to lead into the standalone Bumblebee film that has recently started production. My guess is that after the fall of the transformers, Bumblebee will take the path of Obi Wan and Luke Skywalker and go into hiding until a new order of transformers show up and either need his help, or need to stopped.
Transformers: The Last Knight is set to be released on June 23, 2017.
