I always wanted to use that pun.
The news is already circulating around – Dolph Lundgren has joined the cast of Aquaman and will be playing the role of King Nereus of Xebel.
If you do not recall that name or character, we don’t blame you; King Nereus has very few appearances in the comics. But who is he anyway?
In the comics, Nereus is the leader of a group of exiled Atlanteans who live in Xebel. They join forces with Orm the Ocean Master, Aquaman’s half-brother, after King Nereus offers his desire to dominate the world.
How is he related? Other than the fact that he basically wants to rule the world, Nereus claims to be “the one” for Mera and calls her his wife even though she isn’t. Now, since Mera is Aquaman’s love interest, he has added Aquaman to the top of his hit list. Understandable, right?
It would be interesting to see Dolph play one of the villains in the movie because, let’s admit it – Dolph looks like the formidable opponent; although not the main one in the movie. You might remember Dolph from previous movies such as Rocky IV, The Expendables, and The Punisher (1989).
(HE PLAYED AS FRANK CASTLE! Also, this is where the pun in the title originates from.)
And if you have been following the TV series Arrow, he plays the Russian mobster Konstantin Kovar in the current season (I knew he looked familiar!).
Now, Dolph is not just all model and actor material – he has his master’s degree in chemical engineering and he is also a 3rd dan black belt holder in Kyokushin karate, meaning, he is a MARTIAL ARTIST!
So yes, that definitely adds more excitement for his addition to the casting. His role as Nereus would probably have something to do with Mera and Orm in the storyline of the movie.
Aquaman stars Jason Momoa (Aquaman/Arthur Curry), Amber Heard (Mera), Patrick Wilson (Orm), Willem Dafoe (Nuidis Vulko), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), and now Dolph Lundgren (King Nereus).
The movie is directed by James Wan.
