At the dawn of six new Star Wars films, both continuation of the main story and anthology films, we saw some big names in filmmaking attached. J.J. Abrams, director of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, also directed films such as Star Trek and Super 8. Rian Johnson, director of upcoming Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, also directed films like Looper and Brick.
At one point, however, Guillermo Del Toro, director of Hellboy and Pacific Rim, was in talks with Kathleen Kennedy and John Knoll in regards to working on one of these films. Del Toro said that he would “not comment”, as many fans are quick to jump the gun, as it had happened before when Neil Gaiman said he’d “love to write Doctor Strange” with him and it was “all of a sudden” listed on his IMDB page. Although he did say, “there’s some characters that are great,” and had talked about “ideas”, Del Toro wants to work on something of his own, especially “veering a lot towards animation” which he “loves.”
I have to take a moment to speak personally as someone who is an aspiring filmmaker. Thinking as if I were in Del Toro’s shoes, having already done an adaptation in films like Hellboy, I would want to stick to something original instead of being attached to something so huge, and furthermore, such a significant structure to adhere to.
