During the Star Wars Rebels panel at Star Wars Celebration, executive producer and co-creator Dave Filoni announced that the forthcoming season 4 of the show will be its last.
Following the Ghost crew into one final adventure on the small screen, the 15-episode long fourth season of Rebels will lead into the events of Star Wars: Rogue One, and into the time frame of the original trilogy. With Hera Syndulla and astromech Chopper being feautred in Rogue One, the final season seems to be moving towards answering what becomes of the rest of the Ghost Crew, while expanding the Star Wars cannon and firmly establishing itself as part of it.
As for the future of Star Wars animation, the show execs at Celebration implied that just because Rebels is moving to a close, does not mean the end of the animated universe. Starting with 2008’s The Clone Wars, the animated adventure is set to continue with this year’s Forces of Destiny, and beyond with an announcement of a new animated adventure, no doubt set to be made in the near future.
