Warning Spoilers for Gotham Season 3.
Gotham has returned from a 3 month hiatus and we could not be more excited! Here is my recap of the episode:
The main focus of the episode is on Edward Nygma, aka the Riddler. In the last episode of Gotham, Ed killed his best friend, Oswald Cobblepot, after he killed Ed’s girlfriend. The beginning of the episode shows Ed asking a professor three riddles and killing him when he fails at solving each riddle. He then starts taking pills that allow him to see Oswald, a figment of his imagination, which argue with him more than helping him. He sends a man dressed in fruit to the GCPD for Gordon, but Lucius solves the riddle and goes after Ed. Ed then has more hallucinations of Penguin, including a song in which Oswald is wearing his comic book top hat. Bullock is currently preparing to talk to the Gotham cadets, but Ed knocks him out while wearing a green costume. He then gasses them and organizes a trap for Lucius, where he has to solve 1 of 3 riddles to save Bullock. He gets the final one correct, but Bullock almost dies only to be saved by Lucius. Nygma then throws his pills into the ocean and moves on from Penguin. He is also wearing his classic comic book outfit.
A side story line of the episode is when fake Bruce returns. When we last saw fake Bruce, he was kidnapped by the Court of Owls. It turns out that they were making him into Bruce Wayne so they could use him. In the episode Bruce receives a note from Selina to talk. When he meets up with her, she tells him that she didn’t send him the letter. Bruce also kicks the crap out of some of Selina’s thug friends. When Bruce walks into an alley, he is drugged by fake Bruce who sent the letter. When Bruce wakes up he looks out of a cell and sees a snowy mountain range. Is he with Ra’s Al Ghul?
A quick but important part of the episode is Jim Gordon’s scenes with his Uncle Frank. Uncle Frank tells him about the Court and how he and Jim’s father were members of the Court. When Jim’s dad saw through the Court’s lies, he was killed. Now the Court wants Gordon to join them. Uncle Frank asks him to help destroy them from the inside. It is unclear what Jim’s answer will be to this proposition.
At the end of the episode Penguin wakes up inside Ivy Pepper’s new place. She pulled him from the river and nursed him back to health. Why she did this is unclear. He remembers that he has to kill someone, which is just great that he wakes up and the first thing he thinks of is murder.
Overall this was a fantastic episode to begin the last half of the season. The Edward Nygma storyline was well done and entertaining to watch, as it always is, and should be a really fun plot point for the rest of the season. The Court of Owls’ master plan shall be revealed soon.
