Based on The Sandman spin-off comic book Lucifer, the tv series tells the story of Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), the Devil himself, who’s bored living in Hell, decides to leave and move to Los Angeles.
There he runs a nightclub, Lux, with the help of Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt), a demon who joined him in his departure. After a series of events he gets involved in a murder investigation where he helps the detective on point, Chloe Decker (Lauren German), much to her reluctance. After the resolution of this case he ends up being Detective Decker’s new partner.
In a world where police procedurals prove to be one too many, Lucifer stands out. The weekly cases are fun and exciting and the main plot proves to be intriguing, with mysteries waiting to be solved.
One of the main characteristics is the supernatural aspect of the show, the plot diverges from the usual crime TV shows because of Lucifer and his unique abilities, and this lets the show approach the usual crime solving process a bit differently. The incorporation of religious elements helps create the show’s mythology and with these as a base it builds itself up, taking the comic-book elements as a mean of developing characters and story likewise.
The writing in this show is simply phenomenal. In my opinion, it is one of the funniest shows on TV right now, with witty dialogue and humorous situations that leave viewers cracking up. On top of that, the writers also manage to let the characters flourish in dramatic situations, where it brings out the viewers’ empathy and one can’t help but feel an emotional connection with these characters. Each week viewers can watch how the events surrounding these characters help develop them.The pacing and development of the story are honestly brilliant.
Lucifer is an unique TV show, incorporating diverse elements from different genres. The writers’ ability to play with them is reflected on the quality of the content. It is the perfect combination of different genres that manage to amuse and connect with its viewers.
Overall, why you should be watching Lucifer? There are different reasons as explained before, but by my criteria it is one of my recommended TV shows, as it is fusion of different genres while not losing itself completely in something, and manages to keep the development of both characters and story balanced. It’s extremely funny and always makes me laugh. I really hope that they continue making this tv show a great one. So if you are into demons, murders, mystery and comedy, I can guarantee you will thoroughly enjoy it. You won’t regret it.
