Earlier this year, many fans clamored for star of the recent King Arthur: Legend of the Sword Charlie Hunnam to portray Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on the big screen. Hunnam responded in an interview saying: “I didn’t grow up a comic book fan” and superhero films are “not really my taste”. Furthermore, he says: “I must confess I don’t really know who the Green Arrow is. It’s not part of my vision for my career or what I aspire to do”.
In a more recent interview, though, it seems Hunnam has been changed by the island, so to speak, in the last couple months. He reiterates that he’s “not a fan of the comic books,” but doesn’t know why people are always asking him about Green Arrow, then eagerly expressesing some degree of interest: “Well then come on DC, what’s up? Give me a call!”
Realistically, Hunnam’s original statement makes one wonder if he might be joking. When it comes to Hunnam and blockbuster films, Pacific Rim‘s success and King Arthur‘s flop may put him in a neutral stance when it comes to starring in another. Given the DC Extended Universe’s shaky start yet hopeful future that may or may not be on the rise after this year’s Wonder Woman and Justice League, everything seems so far up in the air.
Hunnam is most famously known for his role as Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy, a character that is, in handful of words: a loyal, smart, stern & skillful leader. All these traits can be said the same of Stephen Amell’s portrayal of Oliver Queen on Arrow. Not only that, but in King Arthur, Arthur, one of the oldest heroic characters in existence, in Hunnam’s portrayal exhibited skills in martial arts and was also described by a critic as “a nice dude – funny, charming”. This combination of traits make Hunnam a perfect fit as the thrill-seeker yearning for adventure in fighting crime that Oliver Queen was at one point in the comics.
With the constantly-growing slate of DC Extended Universe films, one of the most recent additions being Joss Whedon’s Batgirl, more can’t be far behind. Also, with The Flash already slated to get his own film in the DCEU, and the character’s TV show to enter its fourth season this fall, Green Arrow, the character the Arrowverse takes its name from and with whom it all began, surely deserves at least an appearance in the DCEU…and soon!
