Although unconfirmed, The Flash could potentially land a seasoned director.

According to sources close to both The Flash and Variety and TheWrap, Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back To The Future) are Warner Bros.’ top choices. However, Warner Bros. declined to comment.

Zemeckis currently has a project coming that is scheduled to release in November 2018, and that production time could possibly conflict with production for The Flash. According to Variety, this could be the reason Vaughn is in talks. However, Vaughn also has a project coming up, the third installment of the Kingsman franchise. Although Vaughn may be the studio’s pick for the film, this scheduling conflict could get in the way as well.

Regardless of who the studio chooses, either would bring an excellent resume to the table. Vaughn has done a great job in the past with comic related movies such as Kingsman, Kick-Ass, and X-Men. On the other hand, Zemeckis has had success creating timeless films such as Forrest Gump, Back To the Future, and Cast Away.

The Flash has lost director Rick Famuyiwa and has searched for a director since then, and will star Ezra Miller in the title role.

[Update] Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy) has also been added to the shortlist of directors.
