The first look at the biggest event of the summer is finally here. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, The Emoji Movie finally has a trailer. You can find the full trailer below.

This trailer shows us the world of Textopolis, a world within your smart phone. TJ Miller stars as Gene, an emoji who has more than one emotion, much to the dismay of his mother and father who are both meh. Literally. Their last name is Meh. Gene meets up with Hi-5 and Jailbreak, played by James Corden and Anna Farris respectfully, and they go on an adventure to become more than just what they’re programmed to be, because maybe an emoji should show more than just one emotion, yaknow?

This trailer really gives you an idea of what the movie is going for, some serious heart, time and love went into this movie to give it life and who knows, maybe it’ll surprise us all. I like the poop joke at the end. That was classic.

Now here’s the thing, I really don’t have high hopes for this, BUT how could it be salvaged? How could they actually make a movie about emojis good? Well I have a few thoughts:

1. DON’T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY!!

I mean come on, the Lego Movie was amazing because they did not take it too seriously and they weren’t afraid to make fun of how ridiculous the whole concept of it was. But also..

2. The writing needs to be fantastic.

This is not the kind of movie that can just get by with mediocre writing with the concept alone. This movie needs both good writing and jokes as well as..

3. Heart. This movie needs heart.

And I don’t mean “❤️”. I mean touching moments, life risking adventures, relationship building, bonding. Something that makes you feel like “man, this came out of nowhere” and I hate to bring up the Lego Movie again, but when the movie went from good to great was when it brought in heart. When it went from just a kids movie to a movie with some serious depth and love.

Lastly, this can NOT be just a money grab. Don’t do this Sony, don’t just make a movie for the sake of it. Please.

The Emoji Movie hits theaters worldwide August 4th.
