In the past 15 years, we’ve seen Resident Evil, a survival-horror video game franchise that began in the nineties, be adapted into a film franchise, its latest and according to the title final entry Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Throughout it all, although some fans enjoyed it and it was a great financial success, others, especially those that enjoy the classic video games, criticized the films for not staying true to their source material. As someone who didn’t discover the video game until after seeing a number of the films, I was disappointed myself. Although the first couple movies were good despite not sticking to the games, the rest began to degenerate in quality in my opinion. Regardless, the story of Resident Evil needs different treatment for the screen, and it looks like it’s about to get it.
At the Cannes Film Festival, chairman of the board at german production company Constantin Film, those behind the recently concluded franchise confirmed to Variety that a reboot was in production. Currently, the director, stars, and story are unknown, but given the criticisms of the other films, it’s likely they’ll be delivering a better adaptation.
My hope is that there will be little to no original characters, and if there are, they will not be the main character or characters the film focuses on. In fact, the films should do their best to focus on these core characters: Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, Leon Kennedy, and Albert Wesker. Furthermore, other characters like Barry Burton and Ada Wong should play key roles as well. The story should delve as deep into Resident Evil lore as possible, such as the conception of the T-Virus and experiments that came from it. The tone of the films should start off more horror than action: the mansion could provide that seclusion, but in later films once they make it to Raccoon City and the world, the scale should tip ever so slightly.
I won’t get into specific fan-casting or fan-plotting (as Geek Motivation may do that at a later date), but if I had to choose a dream director (I say dream because he won’t have any time given what he’s working on now), it’d be Zack Snyder. The remake of Dawn of the Dead is probably my favorite zombie apocalypse film. It captures the claustrophobia of being trapped and making use of your surroundings. While I did enjoy it, I thought it could be better, but with Zack’s growth as a filmmaker, especially with his extended cut of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and my high hopes for the upcoming Justice League, there would be potential for a great franchise.
