Dead Man’s Chest (2006) Review

Problems:

1. The East Indian Trading Company has been trading with cannibals, but they failed to go into detail about it. Jack’s eyes widen, but that is all. I would have liked some more detail on how they came across these people.
2. Jack could have easily became Davy Jones when he was alone and had the heart. At World’s End would likely have never happened, but, if I am not mistaken, most people thought that it was terrible at least until the fourth came out in 2011. There is a solid thirty-second window to stab the heart. I say that is plenty of time for there to be a new Davy Jones.
3. I also believe that the weight of the water wheel should have killed Jack or knocked him out cold. Nonetheless it is Disney so magic. I think it is one of those things that matters but it does not matter.

Positives:

1. I really enjoyed this movie. I think it is the best one there is. Bill Nighy did a fantastic job with Davy Jones. He was cruel, yet there is sympathy towards him.
2. I really enjoyed the escape part on the island because of Marty (Martin Klebba). His height is what made it enjoyable. Along with the comedy, I found it funny how they had Cotton (David Bailie), who is a mute, watch the long boats.
3. I am grateful they explained how Norrington lost everything. He has a nice sized role and not writing the background in would have been a mistake.
4. There is also some insight on Bootstrap in the beginning. We now know he was a part of the mutiny against Jack Sparrow about 11 years ago.

Synopsis

It has been three years since Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was released.  We open the next chapter to Will and Elizabeth’s wedding day.  It is a wedding day that no one would imagine having.  Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) arrives to Port Royal and has arrest warrants for both Elizabeth and Will.  He also has one for Sparrow and Norrington.  Will is offered the chance to save his and Elizabeth’s freedom by obtaining Jack’s compass and return it to Beckett.

Sparrow and his crew are currently on the run because Bill Turner aka Bootstrap (Stellan Skarsgård) warned Jack that his debt with Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) has expired. They end up on an island that was mentioned in The Curse of the Black Pearl which was the island Sparrow was chief on. It could have been nice, but they were going to eat him and the crew. Will finds a way to get to this island; however, he is caught and is stuck with the remaining crew members. They escape the island and travel up river to seek help from Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris).

Then they travel to a ship wreck where the crewman have been working until their death for Davy Jones. Jones and Sparrow make another agreement about how many souls (100) Jack needs to spare his own life, and Jack gives Jones Will as one of 100 soul. Will is reunited with his father, Bootstrap. and together they steal the key; however, Bootstrap has to “watch” his son die by the Kraken. This was the ship that Elizabeth was on, but she tricked that captain into going to Tortuga; Jack was in search of 99 other members since he sort of got around his debt. Norrington, who lost everything, is also in Tortuga and is hired for Jack’s crew.

Jack, Norrington, Elizabeth, Ragetti, and Pitel go to the Isla Cruces to get the heart. Once Will arrives, the longest sword fight I have ever watched begins or at least it feels like the longest one. It is a well-crafted fight scene so I will give them that. The crew returns to the Black Pearl, and they encounter the Dutchman. Davy releases the Kraken upon them and Jack Sparrow is no more…or so it seemed.

End Credits:

Poochy, the dog that has the keys, is seen as the chief of the cannibals. I consider this scene to be the least important one because nothing happens. The people dance around the dog that later escapes by sea turtles in At World’s End. This is stated by Jack’s dad.
