After one season, Netflix has decided to cancel their show The Get Down.
“The multi-talented Baz Luhrmann and a team of collaborators — Oscar-winner Catherine Martin, legendary MC Nas, Grandmaster Flash, Pulitzer-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, and hip-hop historian Nelson George — have created a music-driven drama that documents the emergence of a new art form. Set in the late 1970s, when New York was at the brink of bankruptcy and disco was dying out, the rise of hip-hop is told through the lives, art, music and dance of a group of young people in the South Bronx.”
A couple of the reasons for its cancellation was it didn’t get as much viewership as Netflix expected it to and the cost to make it. In its first 31 days the debut season only received 3.2 million US views. It cost Netflix $120 million to make, making it the second most expensive show that Netflix has made.
Another reason that contributed to the cancellation of the show was that Baz Luhrmann couldn’t fully commit to the role. He made a post on Facebook saying that the show was “unlikely to continue.” He also stated that, “When I was asked to come to the centre of The Get Down to help realize it, I had to defer a film directing commitment for at least two years.” “The simple truth is, I make movies. And the thing with movies is, that when you direct them, there can be nothing else in your life.”
