Among the seemingly list of huge blockbusters being released in 2017, some would say that Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was forgotten. While the role that made Johnny Depp a Disney Icon Award Winner is still one of the most memorable in Hollywood history, the franchise has suffered from a soft reboot in recent years and has been criticized for lazy storytelling and lackluster performances. While I am not among those who had qualms about the films, I would say the fifth installment can universally be viewed as returning the series to its former glory with an incredible adventure and new and exciting characters on which the future can be built upon.

First, Johnny Depp is in full force as Captain Jack Sparrow. The witty and charismatic swashbuckler with an obsession of plunder and adventure is once again in the middle of a high stakes situation as a new threat has emerged to claim revenge on the young pirate who was the reason for a curse being placed on him. The aforementioned threat is a Spanish captain named Salazar and he is absolutely banana balls crazy. The story is the typical Pirates tale with Jack Sparrow being the center of the conflict, but new players such as Henry Turner (the son of William Turner and Elizabeth Swan whose roles are once again being played by Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley who return to the films for the first time since the third film) and Carina Smyth (whose true heritage is a HUGE third act shocker) and they breathe fun and refreshing new life into the franchise with this palpable chemistry clever banter. Keep an ear out for the quick and clever one-liners between these three character as they tend to return throughout the films.

The story is centered around the search for the Trident of Poseidon which, if found, can somehow break every curse ever created at sea. Henry Turner is determined to break the curse of the Flying Dutchman placed on his father during the events of At World’s End (the third film) and Carina is a woman of science who feels mandated to crack the code of a map that “can’t be read by men” left to her by her father who abandoned her as a child. While they search, they are chased by not only the British Empire, but Salazar as well.

It is an exciting tale filled with twists and turns and action packed sequences. It’s crazy to think that this is the fifth film in the franchise. I guess fans had forgotten just how much fun Pirates films can be. They are a whole different genre of film and unlike anything else out there. Characters like Sparrow and Barbosa are households names because of these films and they are some of the most interesting and creative films Disney has ever created.

If you want to spend 2 hours suspending belief, laughing, and watching some insane action sequences buy your ticket for Dead Men Tell No Tales this weekend and help Disney continue their domination of the worldwide box office.

Rating – 4/5, not as memorable as the original film, but tells a good story with a lot of origin elements to beloved characters like how Jack Sparrow got his name and Barbosa’s motivation to continue to be on the seas instead of settling down on land.
