Review: Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie 

With the rise in superhero films over the years, it was expected that the great Captain Underpants would eventually get his own movie. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie served as a great introduction to the world of the childhood hero, but it also had its share of problems.

Animation

The design of this movie’s animation is superb! It perfectly captures the art of the original books. I felt like I was ten years old again! The unique animation even made some of the visual gags funnier than they should have been. I think this quality is what makes the movie really stand out.

Comedy

Just like the books, Captian Underpants: The First Epic Movie features loads of fun and immature jokes. These gags go anywhere from potty puns to fart jokes. On top of the gross humor, there are also some one-liners and references thrown in the mix, but they didn’t land as well as the other jokes. There were plenty of moments where the movie tried to throw in a quick joke, but nobody in the audience noticed or cared, not even the kids.

Characters

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie contains more than enough of hilarious characters to keep the movie fun! George and Harold (played by Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch) provided loads of hilarious shenanigans and pranks that made the whole audience laugh. Nick Kroll’s performance of the villain, Professor Poopypants, had some funny moments, but he mostly served as the butt of the joke from everyone else. Captain Underpants was the character who stole the biggest laughs. His confused antics throughout the movie amused both kids and adults in the audience, including myself.

Conclusion

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is a fun film for the kids and a great movie for the fans of the original books. For those who are not fans of immature comedy, this probably isn’t the movie for you, but for those who are, I would recommend this movie. Despite the hiccups in the humor, I was left very excited for the adventures to come for the great Captain Underpants. TRA LA LAAAAA!
