*SPOILER ALERT FOR GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2*
We all know custody battles can get rough, but none more so than the legality of the multitude of Marvel characters spread throughout three different, independent companies. One of those characters is Deadpool, who is technically part of the 20th Century Fox-owned X-Men universe. Deadpool paved the way for more nitty-gritty, R-rated superhero films, as well as becoming the first Marvel character to openly break the divine fourth wall in his blockbuster debut.
Many movies over the past few years have set themselves up for sequels and entire franchises. For example, 2008’s Iron Man is seen as the foundation for the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe, but questions have arrived regarding certain parts of the MCU, starting with how exactly Edward Norton’s The Incredible Hulk movie affects the MCU, which has led me to the question, is Deadpool already in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? We here at Geek Motivation believe it is entirely possible, and here’s why.
For starters, the end of Deadpool’s blockbuster debut finds the antihero fighting Ajax atop what shares striking similarities with Marvel’s helicarriers used by the clandestine spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D. Although Deadpool and S.H.I.E.L.D. are currently owned by two competing companies, there is always a strong possibility that they are set on the same Earth.
At the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we find Steve Rogers destroying three separate helicarriers under the control of Hydra. Could this helicarrier in which Deadpool saves his girl be one of those three which was sent to a scrap yard? That option is quite within the realm of possibility. As we know from different synopses of the upcoming Spiderman: Homecoming, there are a few smaller companies who clean up after superhero battles, one of which is owned by Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes, a.k.a. The Vulture. As Deadpool takes place prior to Homecoming, it is likely that this specific helicarrier was removed from the D.C. crash site by one such company and stored in a scrap yard waiting to be dismantled completely.
Moving forward, we now know, thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, that the alien race, The Watchers, exist within the MCU, and that Stan Lee’s cameos are not just random spots. In fact, the places where Stan Lee is seen are reportedly the most important moments of Earth’s heroes. As Stan Lee was seen in a strip club as a DJ where Vanessa was taken during Deadpool, we can assume that that particular moment was paramount in Deadpool’s life.
If this were the case, it means that Stan Lee’s character exists both within the MCU and the X-Men universe as what we can only assume is the same Watcher character. The Watchers, however, fall in a grey area where legality seems to get confusing. It has been reported, however, by Comicbook Resources, that The Watchers are in fact a shared group between Marvel and Fox. Using this, we can come to the conclusion that Stan Lee has seen and reported that Deadpool in fact exists.
Other such instances to show that Deadpool exists within the MCU can be taken from deleted scenes from Deadpool. One scene in particular shows the protagonist Ajax leaving a place called The Raft. Captain America fans would be familiar with this location as the place where the new rogue Avengers, or as I’m hoping they become, the Secret Avengers, are taken after the fight in the airport between Team Cap and Team Iron Man. This scene shows that The Raft is somewhere near the ocean, while Captain America: Civil War finds The Raft actually submerged beneath the ocean.
Yet another reference from Deadpool utilizes a character known as Bob, you know, Jacksonville? TGI Fridays? Anyway, Hydra Bob is a Hydra agent in the comics who is turned by Wade Wilson to fight against Hydra. In Deadpool, Bob is simply a minion of Ajax, but chronologically, Deadpool takes place after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so who knows; maybe Bob was just an out of work Hydra agent looking to make a living.
Even the end credit scene has a very blatant reference to the MCU: Sam Jackson! In this particular scene, Deadpool pokes fun at the films low budget, but also mentions the fans expecting Sam Jackson with an eye-patch. Throughout the movie, Deadpool knows he’s in a movie as he consistently breaks the fourth wall, so Wade knowing who exactly plays Nick Fury isn’t all that impossible, which leads us to think he has to know who Nick Fury is to begin with, and after the fallout of The Winter Soldier, it can be assumed that Nick Fury had become a household name!
All in all, Deadpool has a very strong possibility to be in the MCU. He even leaves his own designated universe in the comics to go and kill his creators in Cullen Dunn’s Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, so there’s definitely precedent for Deadpool popping up during the ultimate battle between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the Mad Titan next year! And who wouldn’t love to hear Deadpool try to drop an F-bomb and have Captain America yell, “Langauge!” at him? We know he’s there, Marvel. It’s time for Steve Rogers to give Deadpool his Priority Identicard in the MCU now, too!
