On Tuesday, we were all shocked when we heard that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller would no longer be directing the untitled Han Solo movie due to creative differences with screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the film with his son Jon, and with others involved in the movie. Their departure has occurred in the middle of filming which started in February.

Now within two days, Lucasfilm has announced that Oscar winning filmmaker Ron Howard will helm the film.

Howard has been named the new director of the Han Solo spinoff, after reports suggested he was the clear frontrunner earlier this week. According to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, Howard will meet with the cast to “soothe a rattled set and will pore over a rough edit to see what the project has and still needs.” The film reportedly had three and a half weeks left of shooting, and five weeks of reshoots in the works.

Ron Howard has made some of the most critically-acclaimed movies of the modern era. Among his many films are Lucasfilm’s Willow, Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind (for which he won Best Picture and Best Director), Frost/Nixon, and Rush. He also starred in George Lucas’ American Graffiti, and remains a TV icon for his roles in The Andy Griffith Show and Happy Days. In Howard, Disney’s getting a professional who has seen it all as actor-producer-director, and can step right in to get the picture back on track.

Themed as a space Western, the film is centered on a young Han Solo, the roguish smuggler and his adventures with Wookiee partner Chewbacca, including their encounter with Lando Calrissian.

The untitled Han Solo film is slated for a tentative May 25, 2018, release.
