We have reason to believe that Spider-Man: Homecoming broke the MCU timeline. Yeah, this is a thing and it happened. Now, before we get started, be aware this article contains mild spoilers for Spider-Man: Homecoming! Be warned!
Now that the poor souls who haven’t seen Spider-Man: Homecoming have left (hopefully to go see the movie), let’s dive in.
At the beginning of the film, we see Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) and his crew picking up some of the wreckage after the Battle of New York (from The Avengers).
Since The Avengers, all Marvel Cinematic Universe films have been accepted as happening at the time of their release, unless otherwise stated. For example, while Guardians of the Galaxy takes place in 2014 (the year of its release), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 takes place directly after the first film, as confirmed by the head honchos at Marvel, despite being released in 2017.
The Battle of New York in The Avengers takes place in 2012, the year of the film’s release. After we see Toomes in the wreckage (presumably in 2012, directly after the battle), we fast-forward 8 years for the rest of the film.
Homecoming was released in 2017, only 5 years after The Avengers. Therefore, unless Homecoming takes place in the year 2020, the Marvel timeline is broken. However, even that possibility is highly unlikely, because we see scenes happening directly before and after the airport battle from Captain America: Civil War (released in 2016).
