Today at the San Diego Comic-Con the official title for the Flash movie has been announced: Flashpoint. Geoff Johns’ Flashpoint is probably the most important DC Comics arc of the last decade.

What is it about?

Barry Allen travels back in time to stop Reverse Flash from killing his mother. In doing so the whole timeline changes. Barry doesn’t have his powers anymore. Superman is imprisoned and has never seen the sun. Bruce Wayne is dead and his father Thomas Wayne is Batman. Earth is a the brink of destruction because Atlanteans and Amazonians are at war, Aquaman and Wonder Woman helming their troops. Barry must find a way to restore the original timeline, but things don’t always work out as expected.

Why is it so important?

Flashpoint resulted in the reboot of the whole DC Comics Universe and worked as a bridge to the new continuity: The New 52. Characters’ origins and their relationships were changed. Their stories were altered. Some fans were displeased with the sudden change, but it did leave more room for creative stories and made it easier for new fans to join this vast universe.

What does it mean for the DCEU?

Without a doubt, this movie will affect the whole Extended Universe. The question is how much? We could be looking at DC’s try to write its wrongs after much criticism from the media and fans themselves. This could potentially reboot the whole DCEU, although it feels as if it isn’t yet well-established to suffer such change. Then again, the changes could be minor and effectively correct mistakes made in the DCEU movies released until that moment. There’s still no release date for the movie. All that’s left is to wait and see.
