Ryan Coogler is known for directing two great movies, Fruitvale Station and Rocky spin-off Creed. Now he is going to direct Marvel’s Black Panther, one of the most unique installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is the first solo movie of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, following his introduction in last year’s Captain America: Civil War.

Fans are excited to see the nation of Wakanda brought to life, as the reaction to the official teaser trailer and San Diego Comic-Con footage was outstanding!

Marvel has a history with not enough creative freedom given to directors. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins left Thor: The Dark World because of it. Edgar Wright was committed to directing Ant-Man, but left before principle photography due to differences in their vision of the film. However this does not seem to be the case for Black Panther.  Ryan Coogler has said he had no such problems and from the sound of it, he had as much freedom as he’s ever had in his young career!MLD-17462_R.JPGScreen Rant has interviewed the director on the Marvel Studios press line at San Diego Comic-Con and asked him about the process of writing the script. Coogler offered high praise of his Marvel collaborators and was pleased to see they were all on the same page throughout it all. Here’s what he said:

“Absolutely. To be honest with you, man, I am still everyday surprised by how brave Marvel is in terms of telling stories and the things that we are doing in this film. I can’t wait to share with the world. But absolutely! Incredible creative freedom, man! And I think that what’s great with working with this studio specifically is that the communication, you constantly feel like you are in it together. You constantly feel like we are trying to make the same movie and trying to make the best version of that movie. So that’s been my experience, but I’ve had a lot of creative freedom.”

It looks like Marvel is finally allowing the creative voices they hire to direct the movie in their own way and take the property in exciting new directions! It’s great to see Marvel learning from their past mistakes and improving.

Marvel’s Black Panther is set to be released on February 16, 2018.

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakanadan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war
