After the sad news of Carrie Fisher’s departure, fans have been asking what will become of the beloved Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise. She is still set to appear in Episode VIII and rumors suggested that she would’ve had an even more important role for Episode IX. The future of the iconic character is still unclear, but John Boyega has clarified on what fans should expect to happen in the upcoming film.
In a recent interview with ABC, the Detroit star talked about Fisher and him having multiple scenes together in The Last Jedi. As for the character herself, he said:
“This movie, it sends her off in an amazing, amazing way,” He told ABC News. “And she is still kept alive in this franchise. That’s the beauty of it: She lives forever in a sense.”
He also expressed how Fisher’s death impacted him, stating:
“It was a strange, strange feeling. I felt like everyone in the cast went silent for a bit after that.”
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that Episode VIII’s production or story has not changed due to Fisher’s death and, that her character will not appear in Episode IX (Interview Below).
