Thor has to be my least favorite superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but through no fault of his own. Although I found the first film to be enjoyable and a welcome installment in the MCU, I could not make it through Thor: The Dark World because it was dull and therefore not as interesting to me. Then comes Thor: Ragnarok.

From the moment I saw the first teaser for Thor: Ragnarok, my thoughts were much like those of director Taika Waititi. He had this to say in an interview with io9 at San Diego Comic-Con:

“To be honest, what I did was I tried to approach it as if there were no other films. I wanted to make this a standalone film. I loved Thor 1 and Thor 2, but if I was going to make this film my own, I couldn’t have come in and tried to make a follow up movie, to try to make the next episode. I wanted to do my own thing.”

Even though he loved both, I didn’t. Finding out Waititi made the next entry in a way to set it apart from the rest makes me more eager than ever to see it! In all seriousness, this is how a film should be made. It should not be reliant (or at least too reliant since this is the MCU) on surrounding films or in today’s day, an entire cinematic universe.

Furthermore, Waititi mentions around 80% of the film was improvised, making for quite the chaotic (in a good way) thrill ride of a space adventure as seen in the trailers. For me, at least in how I largely perceive this adaptation of Thor in the MCU, I think improvisation is the way to go. At the start he was the reckless, fun-loving demigod and by means of story and character development throughout the other two films, this has been buried. Many say it has a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe to it which is somewhat true, but I think it more so brings back the heart of the character Thor.

For Waititi to finish off the Thor films by doing all of this gives him a special place in my heart as one of the greater comic book movie directors.
