After two and a half years since Marvel and Sony came to a compromise on the rights of the ever so popular webslinger, Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb provides Den of Geek with an update on the universe that would have also involved a movie pertaining to the supervillain team, Sinister Six.
While promoting his new film, The Only Living Boy in New York, Webb said he had no difficulty during the making of The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel. Instead, he merely had fun doing it.
He says Sony rode the rough road due to its 2014 hacks and its dispute with Marvel over the rights to Spider-Man, but that did not affect how the movies were made. However, this may have sped up the timeline and created some problems, but he said it was something he had to accept.
Although he has not seen this year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Webb approves of the new Peter Parker/ Spidey actor, Tom Holland:
“I haven’t [seen Homecoming]. I’m desperate to. I’ve just been bouncing back and forth to New York. I saw Wonder Woman, which I loved, and I really want to see it. I think Tom Holland’s great.”
The 500 Days of Summer and Gifted director said if he had to change one thing about the franchise, it would be to take more time and effort into making the movies. He had great power over what was done, and as a result, it was his great responsibility to do such things. He did not know what he was dealing with when he signed onto these projects, and now he has learned to be more meticulous.
During the interview with Den of Geek, Webb said a film on the hero’s greatest foes, the Sinister Six, was to be released before the now-canceled Amazing Spider-Man 3. He explains:
“[Sony was] going to make a Sinister Six movie before [my team and I] did the third [Amazing Spider-Man]. But I wanted…Chris Cooper was going to come back and play the Goblin. We were going to freeze his head, and then he was going to be brought back to life. And then there was that character called The Gentleman. We had some notions about how to do it, but I think maybe we were thinking too far ahead when we started building in those things. But it was a fun exercise. I look back very fondly on those days. Well, [Cooper as the Goblin] was going to be the main villain. He was going to come out and lead the Sinister Six. We had talked about Vulture a little bit too, actually….”
Aside from talk on the canceled Sinister Six film, Webb did not mention anything about plans for the canceled Amazing Spider-Man 3 movie itself or the future of supporting characters such as Felicia Hardy/ Black Cat (played by Rogue One‘s Felicity Jones).
