Recently, we’ve been getting plenty of word on the upcoming Justice League, particularly reshoots: what’s been changed and the outcome of those changes. One recent development though, has us going back to what’s been changed. While the tone of the film is essential, another significant point is what it boils down to and how it ends.

In a /Film Daily podcast, Peter Sciretta talked on what he knew about the rumored changes to the ending. He parallels Steppenwolf to Silver Surfer and Darksied to Galactus. As many predicted, “the ending of the movie was a cliffhanger and Justice League 2 was going to be Justice League vs. Darkseid,” with Darksied arriving on Earth.

It was described as a “down, dirty ending” that was “completely removed,” which is likely for the sake of the tone. What’s good to hear is that “the ending ends the movie like a movie and it doesn’t leave a cliffhanger,” meaning that this installment is contained rather than devoting time to building the universe around it.

He mentions the reshoot done with Wonder Woman‘s Robin Wright, “a flashback explaining who Steppenwolf is and he’s now the big bad of this movie”, which is likely the one seen in the most recent trailer from Comic Con. Overall though, “Darkseid” is “this looming threat who won’t come.” Luckily Sciretta says it was a creative decision that was in a better direction than what had been filmed, at least to an extent. Regardless, things are fixed and it’s encouraging to hear.

Personally, if this change is true, I welcome it. It’s definitely keeping many doors open for the plot of the next film. Even though it should be Darkseid, it doesn’t have to be. The first indication of this, much like Avengers 3 & 4, was Part 1 & 2 was removed from the title to make the films distinct from one another. Since this is just the beginning, it’s better to round the team out in this first film and take the second to really show them in their full form.
