Harrison Wells IV: Tom Cavanagh Teases Next In Line Of Iterations

I must say, one of the best aspects, if not the best aspect about The Flash television show is that every season we get a new version of Harrison Wells, whether through the multiverse or by other scientific means. 

We’ve seen Eobard Thawne’s takeover of Harrison Wells, the original Wells for brief moments, Harrison “Harry” Wells from Earth-2, and H.R. Wells of Earth-19 across the three existing seasons. Fans, myself included, are hoping for a fourth iteration of the character in the upcoming season.

Although much of the cast doesn’t have a clue,  Tom Cavanagh himself commented on this in an interview with ComicBookResources:

“There’s a line in the movie Rocky, ‘You got gaps, I got gaps, together we fill gaps!’ […] Cisco’s so winning, Caitlin’s so winning, Barry is so winning, Joe is so winning, they’re all so winning and so, in Season 2, it was like, ‘Maybe if we had a jackass who has no social skills and is abrasive’ and then that was Harry. And then in Season 3, we had a lot of darker storylines, so like, ‘Maybe we add a little more humor’ and that was HR. And so this year, we’ve had a different villain and so I think there’s going to be areas that we could use a different Wells. We’re going to start with Harry and then find a way, I think, to try and get a different version of Wells in there, be it some version of Harry or whatnot as the season’s gaps present themselves.”

My prediction, given everything he’s said and looking back on what’s been said about Season 4, there will be a darker Wells to balance out the lighter season. Plenty of predictions I’ve seen around the internet are that Johnny Quick might be the next Wells. He’ll probably oppose the team for a brief time, but nothing major given that the show plans to stray from speedsters.

More of what Cavanagh says hints at this:

“I mean, there is stuff that’s involved with this season that we’re talking about how Wells might become a different version of Wells, but I think that’s a storyline too far from me to give up, but you’ll see it!”

I personally hope that somehow, he comes back as the Reverse Flash. It would be sad to see Eobard come back and take over Harry. Instead, having Harry becoming a villainous to-be-rehabilitated Johnny Quick would be interesting. Again, either would be minute occurrences in the story of the season.

Cavanagh concludes with what seems like another hint:

“Nobody would be shocked if a portal opened and Wells came through and he was like, ‘Well, how are you? It’s nice to see you. It’s been a long time.’ And everyone’s like, ‘Uh, we’ve never met.’ ‘Hah! That’s what you think!’”

Seeing a Wells that already knows the team from elsewhere in the multiverse is something we haven’t seen before, and if that were to happen, it’d be interesting to learn what the other team is like.
