Stan Lee, the myth, the legend, is the one responsible for bringing superheroes back to Marvel comics in the 60’s, creating most of the Marvel superheroes we know and love today. As such, he received many honors this year, including being named a Disney Legend and having his place in Disney’s Hall of Fame at this year’s D23 Expo as well as having his hands and footprints immortalized in cement at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood just a few weeks ago.
His next honor comes in the form of the Extraordinary: Stan Lee, a live tribute event with such celebrities as Chris Hardwicke, Todd McFarlane, Michael Rooker, Lou Ferrigno and more, who are there to honor the career of one of comics’ most iconic figures, Stan Lee. It is set to take place this year on August 22, in Beverly Hills.
During an interview with Syfy Wire regarding the event, Stan Lee was asked which of his characters he hoped would get a proper big screen adaptation. His answer was one of his favourite creations: The Silver Surfer. He followed it up with the following statement:
“He’s the one I want to see more. He’s the most philosophical of all the characters I’ve ever worked on. And I have an idea for my cameo in that one!”
Indeed Silver Surfer is one of Stan Lee’s most praise-worthy characters and one of his most underrated. The character first appeared in Fantastic Four issue #48 in 1966, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby, and made his cinematic debut in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, voiced by Lawrence Fishburne and with motion-capture by Doug Jones. While the movie was slammed by critics, many agree the Silver Surfer’s portrayal was one of the movie’s few redeeming qualities, even if it was a bit lacking.
If done right, a Silver Surfer solo movie would make a great and epic cinematic tale, due to his immense cosmic powers, his deep-space explorations and his philosophical quest to understand the human race. The movie rights to the character are currently owned by 20th Century Fox who, despite their success with their X-Men franchise, have yet to prove they can make a solid movie based on the Fantastic Four and its supporting characters, including The Silver Surfer. There’s a possibility that will change with their Fantastic Four spin-off featuring Doctor Doom, with Legion‘s Noah Hawley directing.
There’s also the possibility of Silver Surfer’s movie rights reverting back to Marvel Studios. Marvel has built an amazing cosmic universe with their Guardians of the Galaxy movies and we’ve seen Marvel deal with some of Silver Surfer’s recurring philosophical issues such as human violence and corruption with movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Will Fox or Marvel give Stan Lee and Marvel fans the well-made big screen adaptation of The Silver Surfer they’ve wanted for ages? We’ll have to wait and see.
