While many rumors have circled Matt Reeves’ Batman film, nothing has come more clear than a quote from the director himself. In an interview with KCRW, Matt Reeves said Warner Bros. told him, “Look, it’s a standalone, it’s not part of the extended universe.”

He goes on to say that he wants to find a personal way in to the film and make it resonate with audiences on an emotional level, then citing The Dark Knight and relating his vision for his film to that of Caesar from the Planet of the Apes franchise. Reeves also mentioned that Warner Bros. has not said that the movie has to develop into a trilogy.

Another quote to take away from this interview is Reeves stating, “It’s not like I want to do any version of Batman. I want to do my version of Batman.” He acknowledges that Warner Bros. owns the characters, and he’s accepting if they don’t share his vision for the film, but as of the moment, they’re both on the same page.

Although the quote may be unclear regarding which universe Reeves’ Batman film is set in, it is likely to mean the film is set in the DC Extended Universe’s timeline, but will not feature characters other than the ones pertinent to the film. This could mean the film will be much like Wonder Woman, which was set in the DCEU, but did not directly feature other major DC characters.
