Following today’s exciting news that J.J. Abrams would be writing and directing the untitled Star Wars Episode IX blockbuster, Lucasfilm has announced that the film’s release date will be pushed back. The new date, as with both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi is now in December. December 20, 2019, to be exact.
Previously, the release date for the final chapter of Star Wars‘ New Trilogy was May 25, 2019. This delay is most likely to allow Abrams to acclimate himself with the newest setting and begin writing his take on how the trilogy will end. Abrams brought Star Wars back after the controversial Prequel Trilogy with The Force Awakens back in 2015. For fans, his return to the franchise is welcomed news following the departure of Colin Trevorrow.
