The Terminator franchise has had a troubled history. The three last films of the franchise (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genisys) have been poorly received by critics. But fans of the franchise can be hopefull now that, come 2019, the rights will revert back to James Cameron, the writer and director of the first two Terminator films (The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day) which are considered by many to be two of the best sci-fi action films of all time.
Now that Cameron will have the the film rights to the franchise back, he plans to do a new Terminator film with Arnold Schwarzenegger returning. This new film will wipe away all the events from any media based on the franchise released after T2. However, James Cameron will be busy directing the four upcoming Avatar sequels, so he will only be acting as a producer on the film.
So who did Cameron choose to be the director of the sixth installment of the Terminator franchise? None other than Tim Miller. After being reportedly in talks to direct the film, he has officially been confirmed as a director via a social media post from Skydance shared by Skynet’s Army. The post revealed an invite to a special T2 3D screening which will feature a conversation with James Cameron and Tim Miller about their collaboration on the next Terminator film.
Tim Miller has a very short history as a director, with his only feature-length film being Deadpool. But with Deadpool, Miller proved in his directorial debut that he could make a successful R-rated action film with a small budget, much like James Cameron did with The Terminator, one of his first films. That paired with Miller’s like for stylized action and dislike for making actions movies as big and action-packed as possible should contribute for a more self-contained and back-to-basics Terminator film, which will certainly please most of the fans, especially if it gets an R-rating. His background on visual effects also helps.
Let’s hope Cameron and Miller can measure up to the success of The Terminator and T2 with this new film. And if it all goes well, this will be the first of a new Terminator trilogy, planned by James Cameron.
