Plot summary
After a high-stakes Rick and Morty adventure, grandson Morty Smith longs to get his mind off a Truth Tortoise. This episode explores memories that have never been visited before. In the process, the grandfather and grandson have their memories wiped clean, and they have to find a way to restore them.
Discussion
Elements shown in this episode–where the show features never-before-seen clips–are not series creator Dan Harmon’s first rodeo. This has been done before in Rixty Minutes, Total Rickall, and Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate. This has also occurred in his past NBC show, Community, in episodes such as Paradigms of Human Memory and Curriculum Unavailable.
Death eerily plays a role throughout the entirety of this episode–deaths of the minds, deaths of characters who did nothing to deserve such a dark fate.
- In Moon-spiracy, Morty deals with a suspicious guidance counselor.
- In The Whole Enchilada, Morty has a brief discussion with an alien in a Mexican restaurant about the idea of an afterlife; the being’s afterlife is reminiscent of Ghost–a 1990 film featuring Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg–in such a way that the ghost is dragged to Hell by shadowy creatures.

- In the clip involving an other planetary sunset, a character named Beebo is cut open, having its insides utilized like a Tauntaun from Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back.
- In the clip involving the garage’s light switches, Morty inadvertently unplugs the life supports of several human beings.
- In a brief clip, Rick and Morty are seen burying Santa Claus in the middle of a desert.
- In Jerry’s Mind Blower, father Jerry Smith neglects an intergalactic being named Gobo in his car. This clip is reminiscent to that of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.
These clips seem to teach that maybe not every death has a purpose. Perhaps death has no purpose, and we should live life while we can.
This episode of Rick and Morty deals with Men in Black-esque adventures. Dealing with memories and aliens, perhaps there are things in this world not worth speaking about, let alone even mentioning. Maybe some experiences should be forgotten, and we should let the past be the past.
