The first poster for the new Tomb Raider film has been released today, and the internet reacted.

The reboot, set to be released March 16 2018, stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, who naturally dominates the poster:

While some have praised the poster for sticking to the representation of the character in the reimagined video game, others have commented on the lazy familiarity with other Hollywood posters, and the over-use of the tried and tested ‘back turned’ trope.

Strong, independent, non-sexualised female characters are currently hot properties for Hollywood, as they continue to exploit ‘The Katniss Effect,’ established with The Hunger Games, that arguably led the way for Hollywood to take risks on female leads in other franchises.  Many have praised the evolution towards non-stereotypical characters such as Rey (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) Jyn Erso (Rogue One) and of course, Diana Prince in Wonder Woman.

The poster certainly suggests that this is the representation that we will see.  The gritty, dirty and torn clothes, cement connotations of the exploration, danger and self discovery that made the reboot game so popular.

Naturally some comments decided to focus instead on the apparent proportion issues…
