James Cameron and Tim Miller recently talked at an event about their collaboration on the next Terminator film. There they revealed many details about the film, including the big reveal that Linda Hamilton would star in the film. Cameron went on to express his excitement about the news:
“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return. There are 50-year old, 60-year old guys out there killing bad guys but there isn’t an example of that for women.”
Linda Hamilton is known for many roles in film and television but she’s most associated with her role as Sarah Connor in The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. She helped redefine female characters on film, showing females can be action stars (even if their characters started out as damsels in distress).
So needless to say fans of the franchise will be excited for her return to the franchise alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. And since the film will be a direct sequel to T2, her off-screen death referenced in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is no longer part of the franchise continuity.
Cameron also teased what’s to come for the film, especially in what concerns the protagonist:
“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story. We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
This new Terminator film will be the sixth installment of the Terminator franchise. The script has been writhen by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins), Charles Eglee (Dark Angel) and Joshe Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). The writers are planning make this film the start of a new Terminator trilogy that takes place after T2.
The film will be produced by James Cameron and directed by Tim Miller and will star Arnold Schwarzenegger.
