In a new interview with Vulture, Geoff Johns and Diane Nelson announced an important step in the future of the DCEU. After the success of Wonder Woman, the leaders of DC’s cinematic universe have established a future for their films that differs from that of Marvel. They have decided to not only focus on themes of humanity and humor, but also have stated that they are pulling away from the idea of a cinematic universe, with Nelson saying:
“Our intention, certainly, moving forward is using the continuity to help make sure nothing is diverging in a way that doesn’t make sense, but there’s no insistence upon an overall story line or interconnectivity in that universe.”
This doesn’t mean that the movies will not be in the same universe, just that they won’t reference the events of other movies as much as Marvel’s films do. Johns explained this by saying:
“The movie’s not about another movie. Some of the movies do connect the characters together, like Justice League. But, like with Aquaman, our goal is not to connect Aquaman to every movie.”
Nelson elaborated on Johns’ statement, stating:
“Moving forward, you’ll see the DC movie universe being a universe, but one that comes from the heart of the filmmaker who’s creating them.”
This seems to mean that directors and screen writers will get more individual freedom with their movies, which is an exciting idea for the films. Hopefully this means we’ll get more quality films like Wonder Woman rather than the subpar movies attempting to set up a universe, like Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
