Time to whip out yet another set of comic books! Recently, 20th Century Fox released the very first trailer to the X-Men film franchise’s new movie titled The New Mutants. This is a Marvel movie with a different approach, one that might have never been seen before. You can watch it down below:

According to Entertainment Weekly, director Josh Boone says that this will be “a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe [with] no costumes, no supervillains, [and will attempt] to do something very, very different.” He adds that it will be inspired by works of Stephen King and John Hughes, both of whom gave the 1980’s its essence. Here is a breakdown of what transpired in the trailer.

Warning: Possible spoilers ahead!

The trailer begins by fading into the hall of a secret facility. A woman asks a girl if she has ever hurt another person and if she had any “abnormal” experiences, while the viewer is shown gravestones with the numbers 126, 131, 133, 136, 138, 139 inscribed on them. (What could this mean? The New Mutants comic run ended with Issue #100.) We see a Mirage in restraints, her vitals being drawn on paper.

We pan out on a security room; multiple television monitors, each showing different parts of the facility. The mentor of the group tells Mirage about baby rattlesnakes being more dangerous than adult rattlesnakes. (This implies that the younger form of a species–in this case, teenagers–are more reckless than adults, thus making them a bigger threat to others.)

A glimpse of the film’s other four mutants: Magik, Sunspot, Wolfsbane, and Cannonball. Reyes says that they are all dangerous, which is the reason why they are in the secret facility.

Cannonball is in the laundry room. He has an arm cast on. One of the dryers shakes, and he approaches it. He looks into the window of the dryer when suddenly the inside lights up–exploding with fire–and a hand slaps onto the transparent window. This propels him back.

We then see a damaged Reyes with a scar running up and down her right eye. Mirage lying in grass or ashes. She wakes up in a dark room. Something pops out of the wall. Reyes pushes a cart through a hall while light flickers above her. One of the guys says, “This isn’t a hospital. It’s a haunted house.”

Magik and Cannonball open a door of a room to see a little blonde girl lying in bed. They then see a man with a white smiley face mask. He takes it off–although not revealing his true face to the audience–and the two are horrified by what they have seen. They try running away.

A closer look at the little blonde girl. We can ascertain that she must be a younger Magik, so perhaps they are looking into her past. We then see Cannonball in a mine, followed by a miner swinging a pick-ax.

Reyes stabs Magik. Someone is running through a fiery occurrence. Wolfsbane screaming in the shower room. The five mutants are experiencing their greatest fears.
