The life of a mutant–or anyone associated with one–does not get any easier. Here is our review on The Gifted‘s third episode of its first season, titled eXodus.
Warning: Possible spoilers ahead!
Plot Summary
In this episode, Reed Strucker cooperates with the Sentinel Services in order to be with his family once more. Meanwhile, his wife and children leave the sanctuary to seek help from nearby family.
John Proudstar/ Thunderbird helps Clarice Fong/ Blink reactivate her abilities. Lorna Dane/ Polaris attempts to escape her jail cell.
Discussion
The conflict between human beings and mutants never ends. The local men of the town gather to confront the Strucker family. This scene alone reflects the ordeals those perceived as inferior endure in the world today.
“Normal is gone! Normal doesn’t exist anymore.” Andy speaks the truth after pondering on whether to rob a bank in order to have some money in their pockets.
Perhaps even your own flesh and blood will not help you in dire times of need. Relatives of the Strucker family are put to the test after the events of the previous two episodes. We learn the true value of family and friends: Who is there for you when you need help the most? Who will turn against you? This episode teaches us that the once we should trust the most are those that were there for us through thick and thin.
We also learn that tampering with the minds of others can have drastic consequences.
Easter Eggs and Trivia Facts:
- X2: X-Men United (2003) reference – Whether it be a direct reference or a coincidence, the scene of the men of the town confronting the Strucker family is reminiscent of a scene in X2 in which Bobby Drake/ Iceman’s family turn their backs on him. Similarly, this episode of The Gifted shows the men confronting the Strucker family after receiving word of the family’s whereabouts.
