Warning: Spoilers for Supergirl.
Supergirl season 3 has had a very different tone from previous seasons of the show. It is darker much like the main character, Kara. Last week, we saw Kara deal with a meta human who used fear to commit crime. At the end of the episode, we saw M’gann M’orzz aka Miss Martian appear to Martian Manhunter and asked him to come to Mars.
Summary
The episode opens up with Kara talking to Alex about their wedding shower. J’onn walks in and tells them that M’gann asked him to come back to Mars. Kara decides to go with him. They go into a car which shape shifts into a ship. Maggie tells Eliza Danvers, Alex’s mother, about how her father dumped her at her aunt’s house after finding out that she was lesbian. J’onn and Kara meet up with M’gann and a bunch of white martians who want to help. They reveal that the have found another green martian and that he is J’onn’s father. He knows where a deadly staff that could wipe out the resistance is but doesn’t want to give its location up. Alex talks to Maggie about possibly asking her parents to come to their wedding. J’onn talks to his father but his father doesn’t believe that it is him. Maggie calls her dad and invites him to the wedding shower. She meets him at the bus stop and they converse. J’onn’s dad and J’onn talk about the history of the white martians and how they were banished due to choosing destruction over knowledge. One of the rebel white martians attacks M’gann and tries to get to J’onn’s dad. J’onn brings his dad to their old home. Maggie’s dad arrives at the wedding and puts up a picture of Maggie as a child. He then leaves after Alex and Maggie kiss. Maggie goes after him and he goes off on a tangent about how he had to deal with being racially discriminated and beaten and how people haven’t changed. Kara inspires J’onn’s father to give J’onn a chance. They relive a memory where J’onn’s dad and daughters surprised him on his birthday. The resistance is ready to go up against the white martians for the weapon and they successfully get it. They take the staff back to earth as well as J’onn’s father. Maggie also says bye to her dad and gives her the picture he gave her of her as a child.
Analysis
This was one of the best episodes of Supergirl ever. The parallel with J’onn and his dad compared to Maggie and her dad was very well done. The contrasted perfectly. The emotion portrayed by David Harewood and Carl Lumbly, who played J’onn and his dad, was amazing. Supergirl is the most political Arrowverse show and it did that well with Maggie’s dad and how he feels about racism and homosexuality. An interesting thing I found in the episode was the picture of Maggie as a child. It could represent her hope that her father would accept her. It isn’t there for most of the episode but when it shows up you get a sense that he’ll be accepting. Then when she gives it back to him after he leaves, it symbolizes that she’ll never have his approval.
