Plot Summary

In this episode, Marcos Diaz/ Eclipse is summoned to do some dirty work for an old friend. Lorna Dane/ Polaris finds that something is wrong with him.

Meanwhile, Reed Strucker discovers something about his daughter’s boyfriend that could perhaps put the whole Mutant Underground in danger. Sentinel Services Agent Jace Turner joins forces with Roderick Campbell to take down the Mutants, although they run into some complications with the government.

John Proudstar/ Thunderbird tracks down Clarice Fong/ Blink as a means to get her back in the group before the Sentinel Services does.

Discussion

In eXtreme measures, we learn that the stakes are only going to get higher. As Proudstar says, “Things are going to get worse before they are going to get better.” Indeed, this is true; Agent Turner has something chaotic in store for the Mutant Underground, and this ominous plan will not look pretty for our heroic refugees.

We also learn more about Sage, most specifically her mutant abilities. If you’re a struggling student (no matter where you are), you would understand how convenient having this power is.

Jace Turner’s heavy debate on suspected terrorists is something that must not be overlooked. In today’s society, some people tend to associate terrorism with those of certain backgrounds, and this is exactly what Turner and Campbell are doing in this episode. The violence that occurs around the world comes in many shapes, colors, and sizes, and deducing this to just one group of people is unreasonable.

Overall, this episode of The Gifted seems to serve as the calm before the storm since there is not much action between the good guys and the bad guys. The discussion on determining who is and who is not a terrorist is a good lesson which can be applied to our world today. We are only are dangerous as the ideas we decide to act upon, and this says something about where we stand as human beings. With six episodes left, here’s to hoping the latter half of the season picks up its pace.

Easter Eggs, References, and Trivia Facts:

  • Trask Industries –
    • This popular mutant-hunting company is named dropped towards the end of the episode. Reed Strucker said that this “shut down in [2006]” and that his father worked there for 35 years. When you do the math and put two and two together, Reed’s father had been there since 1971. When Logan/ Wolverine traveled to the past in X-Men: Days of Future Past, he found himself in 1973. Once again, the X-Men timeline confuses us.

What do you think of that reveal? Do you think Bolivar or Larry Trask will appear in a later episode? Do you think an actual Sentinel will make an appearance? Are you excited to see the fight between mutants of Sentinel Services and those of Mutant Underground? Let us know!
