  • Black Panther has been breaking many records since its release on February 16th, including records for films with black directors, films with a predominantly black cast, superhero solo films and superhero films in general.

But today, Black Panther broke another record, perhaps the film’s most impressive yet: the highest grossing domestic superhero film. The record, previously held by another Marvel film, The Avengers, was reached when Black Panther grossed over $630 million, putting it at the place of 5th highest grossing film domestically, just behind (from fourth highest to highest grossing domestically) Jurassic World ($652M), Titanic ($659M), Avatar ($760M), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936M). It also sits at 12th highest grossing film internationally, with $1.2 billion.

This was surprising to many as the film’s predominantly black cast and a lesser known superhero on the lead didn’t make it out to be such a hit. But its representation of a minority and it’s themes of unity over separation spoke to many, and its compelling characters, exciting action sequences, great world building and sick soundtrack also helped.

Black Panther is still in theatres. The film is directed by Ryan Coggler and stars Chadwick Boseman as the titular character. It currently sits at 98% on the critic’s score on Rotten Tomatoes.
