San Diego Comic Con, the biggest geek culture event of all, is only a week away. There are plenty of reasons to be excited for this huge fan event, from the guests to the cosplays to the exclusive products, but what arguably deserves the most hype are the panels and more specifically, the announcements. Regardless if Disney and HBO’s absences means there will be no previews for Avengers 4, Star Wars Episode IX or the 8th season of Game of Thrones, the door is still open for many possibilities of announcements and updates in the realms of movies, TV shows and games.

1. Aquaman Trailer

This one is a no brainer. Warner Bros. has had a big tradition when it comes to debuting trailers for upcoming DC movies. There were even movies like Suicide Squad  and Justice League that had two of their trailers debuted in two different cons. This, coupled with the fact that Aquaman is coming to theaters on December 21st 2018, makes it a perfect candidate to debut its trailer at this year’s Warner Bros. panel. With James Wan as a director, a cast that includes Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman and Dolph Lundgren and the hopes that this movie will get the DCEU back on its feet after the disastrous performance of Justice League, makes Aquaman one of the most hyped movies of this fall, making fans eager for a first trailer.

2. Cheetah Revealed

Continuing with Warner Bros. and DC, let’s skip ahead to another upcoming DC movie: Wonder Woman 1984. The movie, which comes out on November 1st 2019, has already begun filming and some set photos were already released, one with Gal Gadot reprising her role of Wonder Woman and one with Chris Pine as what is assumed to be a descendant of Steve Trevor. With Cheetah already confirmed as the villain, with Kristen Wiig reprising her role, it seems likely that we’ll see photos of the actress in costume, giving us our first look of the movie’s version of Cheetah. And if Cheetah will be brought to life by motion capture, then promo art of the character being revealed is also a possibility. It will be interesting to see if they go with the classic look or the modern New 52 look.

3. X-Men: Dark Phoenix Trailer

Now we go from Warner Bros. to 20th Century Fox. They will also have a panel, which will mostly focus on the upcoming film, The Predator. That doesn’t mean they won’t make announcements regarding other upcoming movies. The debut of a first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix might be what Fox needs to build hype for their movie. Considering that its release was pushed to February 14th 2019, the underwhelming reception of X-men Apocalypse and their first attempt at a Dark Phoenix Saga adaptation, X-men: The Last Stand being a failure, are all factors that have contributed to the low expectations of fans. Either that, or they announce that they’re finally going forward with the Disney merger and all future Fox/Marvel projects have been cancelled in favor of making X-men and Fantastic Four movies within the MCU, which would be amazing (as long as they keep making Deadpool movies with Ryan Reynolds).

4. Updates on The Avengers Project

Even with Marvel Studios’ absence from this year’s SDCC, there are still plenty of reasons for Marvel fans to get excited about the event, especially the Marvel Games panel which could share some updates about a very anticipated Marvel game: The Avengers Project. This collaboration between Marvel and Square Enix (the company behind the Final Fantasy games) was announced January 26, 2017 and Marvel fans and gamers alike were disappointed when no announcements regarding the game were shared at this year’s E3. But E3’s loss could be SDCC’s gain if Marvel decides to share some news about the game at the Marvel Games panel, or even an official trailer or gameplay footage.

5. Uptades on the Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV show

This one is a little unlikely, but not impossible. Recently, Amazon Studios has acquired the rights to Lord of the Rings with plans to make the iconic book series into a TV show, which left fans confused but also intrigued. And with an estimated one billion budget for the show, the biggest in television history, and shows like Game of Thrones proving that epic fantasy TV shows can be made with a TV budget give the project much potential. The Amazon Prime Video Showcase would be a great opportunity to reveal some news about the project, like a screenwriter or show-runner, to give fans an idea of which direction they’re planning on taking the show. It’s a possibility.

Will any of these predictions be right? We will have to wait for when San Diego Comic-con comes, from July 19th to July 22nd!
