WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

We’ve known since the previous Avengers installment back in 2015 that both Maria Hill and Nick Fury are still ever-present in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet, we haven’t heard from them since, at least not until the end credits of Avengers: Infinity War when they witness the after effects of the infamous snap conducted by Thanos wielding the Infinity Gauntlet with all the Infinity Stones. They too, however, are affected by the snap. Given the fact most of the essential characters that disappeared will be getting films beyond the snap, it comes as no surprise that these two will be returning as well.

Nick Fury, portrayed by none other than Samuel L. Jackson, first appeared in the end credits of Iron Man (2008), declaring the existence of a universe beyond Tony (and boy has there been!). Maria Hill, portrayed by How I Met Your Mother‘s Cobie Smulders, first appeared in The Avengers (2012), informing Nick about the research being done on the Tesseract (and subsequently thrust into action after Barton turns to Loki’s aid in stealing it). We’ve seen them appear in a handful of films since, helping save the world from the Loki & the Chitauri, HYDRA, and Ultron, and even cameo appearances in ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  Their confirmed return beyond the snap: in next year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, the sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

It’s a wonder to think how they’ll factor into the story. My theory: Peter’s friends are on a summer Eurotrip and somehow, after the events of Avengers 4, Peter reappears where his friends are and reunited with them. Quentin Beck will be taking his magic show to Europe after failing in the US, but again will fail hysterically until powers are granted to him somehow by the reality stone (a la Wanda and Pietro Maximoff). Maria and Nick will also resurface there, but without any contact with anyone and trying to find a way back home. They’ll take witness to Peter and will aid him in defeating Mysterio.

Ever since the interaction between Nick Fury and Peter Parker in the Ultimate Spider-Man video game based on the comics of the same name, as well as in the animated series, I’ve been waiting to see how it would play out in live-action. What about you? What’s your theory on how these two will factor in the next chapter of Spider-Man’s story? Let us know on Twitter @geekmotivation and follow us for more news like this!
