Talk about a comeback!

Deadline reports that director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) has been hired by none other than Warner Bros to write and, possibly, direct the sequel to DC’s Suicide Squad. This is his first publicly known project after Disney’s firing last summer.

Gavin O’Connor (The Green Hornet) was to direct the film, but is now working with actor Ben Affleck (Justice League, Gone Girl) on another WB project called Torrance, a Brad Ingelsby-scripted drama that he’ll be directing.

The most shocking (for lack of a better word) part of this situation is that WB and Gunn were talking business right after Disney was finishing up his settlement out of the director’s seat on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Last summer, Gunn was fired by Disney’s Alan Horn after a series of tweets, that were written by the Guardians director nearly a decade ago, were surfaced by an alt-right group. In these, there were inappropriate sexual jokes. Gunn has previously apologized for these tweets, stating they were “totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative.”

Even after the cast of Guardians showed support and solidarity with Gunn, especially Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn has stated that Disney will keep using James’ script.
