Earlier this year James Gunn confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 would be released in 2020. However, due to him being stripped of his director title after the controversy regarding his past tweets, it now seems like production won’t begin until 2021. Since filming was supposed to begin next year, the whole production process is now pushed back a whole two years. This means that we may not even see the movie until 2023.
While it seems like they are going to keep Gunn’s script, based on a Tulsa World
interview with Sean Gunn, he will not direct the film and the position is currently
open. James Gunn is also listed as the sole writer on the Production
Weekly report, as well as the film having the working title of Hot Christmas and production being pushed back until 2021.
While the main cast of the Guardians movies have vied for Gunn to return as the director, Disney has made it clear that he is out of the picture and have been meeting with potentials, one perhaps being Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), to fill the spot.
