With the release of the long-awaited sequel this weekend, we’re gonna take a look at John Carpenter’s classic film from 40 years ago.
Halloween is the story of the psychopathic killer, Michael Myers. When he escapes from his mental institution, he preys upon his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois and causes a reign of terror among the local teenagers, including local babysitter, Laurie Strode.
Halloween doesn’t entirely age all that well. Some of the kill scenes lose their edge when compared to younger slasher films. All of that, however, pales in comparison to the elements of this movie that make it timeless. The pacing is very steady and builds up the intensity nicely. John Carpenter’s score steals the show in every scene. I never got sick of the original theme. The acting is done fairly well, but nothing extraordinary to be seen.
All in all, you should definitely see the original Halloween before you see the new one. Not just to get caught up on the story, but to see the genre-defining style that makes the franchise so good to begin with.
