The wait is over, and finally, after more than 2 years, Daredevil is back with its third season.

This season starts after the events in the finale of The Defenders Season 1 (if you didn’t watch the show, don’t worry, it’s explained in the first episode. Netflix also made a video that plays as you start watching, recapping the first 2 Daredevil seasons and The Defenders).

As many already know, this season is based on the Born Again arc, but it doesn’t rely completely on this storyline.  After the events in The Defenders, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) is believed to be dead.  He’s found in the rubble of Midland Circle and asks to be taken to the church where he grew up. There, Father Lantom takes him in and, with the help of sister Maggie, they nurse him back to health. The recovery is long and hard. Matt becomes disillusioned and loses faith, thinking he was foolish to believe he was given a purpose by God.

Throughout the first episodes, viewers see how Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy (Elden Henson) are coping with Matt being gone. Karen doesn’t accept that he’s dead, she keeps holding out hope that he’s somewhere out there and that she and Foggy can find him. Foggy is devastated by his best friend’s death and plagued with nightmares of him.

Matt decided that it would be better if he stayed away from his old life, but everything changes when the Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) cuts a deal with the FBI and leaves prison to be taken into protective custody.

This season has the same essence in a way as season 1. Every episode this season is thrilling: something happens that leaves viewers anxious and keeps them on the edge of their seats. Although another villain crucial in Daredevil’s mythos is introduced, Fisk once again takes center stage and it’s fantastic. D’Onofrio’s performance is outstanding and chilling. Fisk is without a doubt the best villain in the Netflix Marvel Universe.

During this season viewer’s also get more backstories. The puzzle pieces about Karen’s life before moving to New York are finally put together and add much-needed character depth. Of course, the main story is Matt’s and this season is heavy on the theme of identity, and the question: was Daredevil or Matt Murdock the mask? The whole story development is just deeply satisfying.

The action sequences are once again amazing. For example, we get (what I think is) the best action sequence in this universe. It left me breathless and freaking out.

Daredevil has proven once again that it’s a fantastic show and that it’s probably the best Marvel television series to date.
