With the highly anticipated new installment of the Halloween franchise hitting theaters receiving both critical and commercial success, it seems another masked silent killer is shaping up to make a comeback. Basketball extraordinaire LeBron James is making sure of this, as it has been confirmed that he is in talks to produce a Friday the 13th reboot.
These news came after a legal dispute between the original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller and Horror, Inc., which resulted in the rights of the franchise’s characters and locations reverting back to Miller. He and Vertigo Entertainment, the company behind many modern horror hits such as It, The Ring, The Grudge and The Strangers, are planning to team up with LeBron James and his company Springhill Entertainment.
At first, James might seem like an odd choice to some, but LeBron James is a big Friday the 13th fan (and a horror fan in general, having dressed up as Pennywise last year). James even released a line of Friday the 13th sneakers. He also has many producing credits, including the upcoming Space Jam 2.
The original Friday the 13th was a released in 1980 and had many subsequent sequels. The original doesn’t follow the franchise’s iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, but rather his mother, as she takes her revenge on innocent camp counselors working at Camp Crystal Lake for her son’s death by drowning many years ago in the same summer camp. It was afterwards that Jason Voorhees came back from the grave to follow on her mother’s footsteps and later expanding his killing spree to strange places like Manhattan, space and even Hell.
The series was already rebooted in 2009, and it will be interesting to see if the reboot will follow the original or if it will follow the same route as the previous reboot and jump straight to the hockey mask-wearing killer Jason. It will also be interesting to see if the reboot succeeds and if the resulting franchise will reach the campy and ridiculous heights as some of the other films. For now, though, this Friday the 13th reboot seems to have the right people involved to deliver both a thrilling, chilling slasher flick and a worthy comeback for the Voorhees family.
