Weeks ahead of the theatrical release for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Sony Pictures Animation is already working on a sequel and a spin-off.

THR reports that Joaquim Dos Santos, best known for his work on Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, has been chosen to direct the sequel.

Meanwhile, Laren Montgomery, who worked with Dos Santos on Netflix’s Voltron animated series and co-directed DC animated’s Batman: Year One and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, is negotiating with Sony “to helm an untitled Spider-centric project that will gather the female heroes in the Spider-Man universe of characters in one adventure.” Bek Smith, writer for CBS show Zoo, is set to write the script.

Details for both projects have not been announced, but rumors of the all-female spinoff suggest that fans might get to see Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, Madame Web, Spider-Girl, Silk and others in action.

The news comes after reports of Sony Picture’s Venom broke October box office records, with over $822 million worldwide since its release. At the same time, early buzz surrounding the film claims that Into the Spider-Verse is “the best superhero film of the year”.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens in theaters December 14th.
