It seems that Warner Brothers are going for a less connected cinematic universe. With the success of Aquaman, Warner Brothers are going to stray from the format the MCU has popularized an go with standalone projects. According to the chairman at Warner Brothers, the following was said when asked about the status of the Worlds of DC:
“We all feel like we’ve turned a corner now. We’re playing by the DC playbook, which is very different than the Marvel playbook. We are far less focused on a shared universe. We take it one movie at a time. Each movie is its own equation and own creative entity. If you had to say one thing about us, it’s that it always has to be about the directors.”
This is huge in regards to the thought process behind the DCEU. Honestly, I like this approach way more than the MCU approach for the DC characters. I think certain characters just don’t share each other spaces too well. I would like to see small crossovers. For example, I would love to see Aquaman and Wonder Woman tie-in, or a Flash and Cyborg tie in movie. With Justice League 2 nowhere near the top of the totem pole for DC, it will be interesting to see how they attack their cinematic universe ahead, especially with Wonder Woman 84 and Shazam on the way in the near future.
