Hey, in case you have been under a rock or just dealing with life, Captain Marvel comes out this week! Do you want to go see it, but have a lot of questions? Maybe it is the fact that you saw Avengers Infinity War and have no idea whose emblem showed up on the pager in the film’s post-credits scene…Or, it could be that you just want to see a movie this weekend and it looks interesting! Never fear! Today at The Cinema Spot, I’m here to break down some of those questions that you might have...

Q: If I have not seen any other Marvel movie, can I still see this one?

A: If you plan on seeing Captain Marvel and have not seen any other Marvel movie, you will not be lost at all. Captain Marvel is the origin story of Carol Danvers, a pilot who somehow gets wrapped up in shenanigans with these other-worldly beings called the Kree and the Skrulls. The film serves as an introduction to her character, so it stands alone from the rest of the MCU in that it does not continue the plot of the other MCU movies. In fact, it took place before it all. The caveat to that is you may not feel the same connection with some of the characters that other audience members might.

Q: Let’s say I want to watch some of the MCU movies to get caught up on the characters in this movie, where should I start?

A: If you want to (although you do not have to), I would recommend starting with the 1st Avengers to see Nick Fury (Sammel L Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) in action. They have large roles in the movie, so watching the first Avengers will give you a good idea of their characters’ tone and subtle background. Other than that, you can pick and choose where you want to go. Want to see a member of one of the alien races that will show up in Captain Marvel? Watch the first Guardians of the Galaxy to see Ronan the Accuser and Korath the Pursuer. Want to learn what the current status is the of MCU is before seeing this movie? Watch Avengers Infinity War. Don’t want to watch anything at all and just see Captain Marvel? Cool, lucky for you, that is an option! You do not have to know anything about the MCU to go see the movie due to it being an origin story, although it is your call!

Q: Who’s in the movie and when does it take place?

A: Let’s start with the main cast. Brie Larson stars as the main hero, Carol Danvers. Samuel L. “GOAT” Jackson reprises his role as a much younger Nick Fury who, at this point in time, is just a regular S.H.I.E.L.D. agent!  Clark Gregg plays young intern/new agent Phil Coulson, who helps and aids Carol and Fury on their journey. Jude Law plays Carol’s teacher, a professor of sorts, Yon-Rogg. While those are just a few, the movie also includes a lot of other great names like Ben Mendelsohn, Annette Bening and Djimon Hounsou just to name a few. The movie takes place in the 90s, so expect nostalgia through and through! There is even a Blockbuster in the trailer along with Ms. Larson rocking a Nine Inch Nails shirt!
