The Hollywood Reporter officially confirmed that director Destin Daniel Cretton has joined Marvel Studios to helm the upcoming Shang-Chi film. Cretton will be working with a script that’s currently being written by Dave Callaham, who is also a screenwriter for the upcoming DC film Wonder Woman 1984. THR also confirmed that he’ll be working along with Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige and executive producers Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Jonathan Schwartz.

Cretton is mostly known for Short Term 12, an indie film hit from 2013 that stars Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) “as a woman in a group home for teenagers”, and is currently working with her and Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther) in Just Mercy.

Shang-Chi is a Chinese-American superhero created by Steven Englehart and Jim Starlin, first appearing in Marvel Comic’s 1973’s Special Marvel Editon No. 15. During the 1970s, Shang-Chi was a commercial success and had a recent resurgence as an official member of The Avengers in 2012.

The Shang-Chi project is the first Asian-led superhero film by Marvel Studios. The project will form part of the studio’s Phase 4 lineup, joining the Black Panther and Doctor Strange sequels, a Black Widow prequel and The Eternals origin film. All of the mentioned are part the upcoming roster of movies that will follow after the events of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, but no official release date have been confirmed for.
