IT: Chapter Two is an upcoming horror film directed by Andy Muschietti and is a direct sequel to the 2017 smash hit, IT. It is set for release on September 6th, 2019 and today we got our first look at the film in the form of a teaser trailer, and a rather long one at that. As somebody who has read the book and absolutely adores the 2017 film, I am over the moon after seeing this first trailer. Let’s get into it.

The trailer opens with adult Beverly, played by Jessica Chastain, entering her childhood home, now the home of an older lady, and asking questions about Derry. Anybody familiar with previous IT material, the 90’s TV movie or the novel, knows exactly what’s going on here. As much as I love the 2017 film, I can say with certain confidence that the film was not overly scary. With this trailer alone, I can already tell that this film will be a whole different animal. The scene with adult Beverly is executed so perfectly and the tension builds and builds until the reveal that it’s Pennywise.

For example, the subtlety of some shots in this film build true terror, as opposed to the jump scares that sadly plagued the first film. When Beverly is sitting on the couch and the old woman is visible behind her, the way the woman contorts her body into the shadows is an image that won’t leave you. It’s not accompanied by a big loud noise that’s intended to startle you. No, its an image of something truly disturbing that is allowed to be truly disturbing. It’s the perfect example of how horror films should be made, and I am thrilled that they are going this direction with the sequel.

Losers club

The scene with adult Beverly takes up a majority of the time in this extended teaser trailer, but not all of it. The trailer ends with quick cuts of various iconic scenes from the book and offers up our first looks of the actors portraying the adult versions of the kids from “The Losers Club.” The shots of Pennywise flying through the sky with a bunch of balloons were incredible and made me beyond excited for the film, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the final moments of this trailer.

Pennywise and Andy

When a little girl is patrolling the sewers, Pennywise’s hands shoot out the dark and clap in an obvious callback to the 2013 hit film, The Conjuring. The claps are creepy by themselves, but when Pennywise’s head comes out of the dark and smiles, before simply saying, “Hello”, the horror gets cranked up to a whole new level.  Bill Skarsgard was wondrous in the first film and it looks like he’s captured that magic again.

IT: Chapter Two is shaping up to be a worthy successor of the first film and appears to be pushing the horror to new heights. Fingers crossed it lives up the hype of this trailer.

Have you seen the trailer for IT: Chapter Two? What did you think?

Did you like the first film? We’d love to hear your opinion!
