Sony is on the hunt for a director for the sequel to its 2018 hit film Venom, starring Tom Hardy, and it seems as if they may have found a contender in Andy Serkis.

Shortly after Venom was released, fans were relieved to find out that a sequel had been confirmed. However, director Ruben Fleischer, who helmed the first film, announced that he would not be returning to the director’s chair since he has been busy working on the highly anticipated Zombieland: Double Tap.

Andy Serkis is critically acclaimed for his motion-capture acting work, which took flight after portraying Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2002-2004). He is also known for his role as villain Ulysses Klaue in the 2018 record-breaking Marvel Studios film, Black Panther. Serkis made his directorial debut in 2017 with the drama Breathe and also took control of 2018’s Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, which aired on Netflix.

A script for the Venom sequel has already been written by Kelly Marcel, with Woody Harrelson portraying iconic villain Carnage, which was teased at the end of the first film.
